PRESSURE MOTORISTS Trains have right-of-way. Motorists must interpret signs, watch for hazards, determine if trains are coming and estimate train speeds
CAN PRESENT UNEXPECTED HAZARDS Hazards: May have sight obstructions (steep road approaches, trees, buildings, etc.), missing or fallen signs, and rough and/or elevated track.
COMMONLY HAVE CROSSBUCKS Public Crossings: 5,717. With gates: 2,856. Other activated crossings: 864. Number with passive warnings: 1,997. Private crossings: 2,790 (often with no warning or protection devices).
(FRA current crossing inventory as of 7/30/14)
SAFEST Based on traffic volume, gates are 80-90% more effective than crossbucks and stop signs
RAILROADS Railroads such as CSX and Norfolk Southern are not precluded from determining and funding railroad crossing safety needs
